Surfacing
"Surfacing" emerged from a transformative month-long residency in Finland. When I arrived at the residency I was coming out of a difficult period in my life. Still struggling emotionally, I found solace in wandering the tranquil Finnish landscape. I embarked on daily hikes with my camera in hand to capture its profound beauty.
Immersed in these walks, I felt myself dissolve into the vast expanse, awakening a deep sense of unity with my surroundings. Back in my studio, I endeavored to recreate the sensation. Projecting the walk’s images onto a wall, I positioned myself within the scenes, merging with the landscape through deliberate contortions. This process became a graceful dance, harmonizing with and distorting the lush landscape.
Through the lens, I captured the culmination of this endeavor—a series of abstract images. They portray the intricate connection between my body and the environment, a discovery of beauty forged through the physical and perceptual relationship. This artistic odyssey not only allowed me to connect with the environment but also offered profound insights into my own emotional journey.
